On Friday the 8th of February, I visited Ilford Wanderers RFC for the final night of The Ghost of Chesterton House there. Safe to say I finally got my adrenaline fix again!
About The Show:
The Ghost of Chesterton House is an immersive theatre performance by Freeman Productions. The team is relatively small and they have been producing The Ghost of Chesterton House since January 2018. The show is their inaugural production yet it is so well done you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking they had lots of prior experience! The team have gone through an extensive period of research during early stages of production and have spoken with many audiences after production to find out what worked well. This means that two performances are rarely the same and the effort put in to producing the experience really shows! It also really shows how much they care about giving the best quality experience possible!
My Review:
I absolutely loved this production! I am a massive fan of immersive theatre and I must say this is easily the best production I have seen in a long time! I was immediately impressed as I walked into the set, filled with smoke and a musky aroma, and that set the tone well for what would be roughly 40 minutes of constant, on edge thrills.
The show bases itself on psychological fear rather than blood and gore with constant plot twists and the story slowly unraveling. This isn’t to say there isn’t any violence or physical jumpscares, quite the contrary. I often found myself jumping during the show and even the person I went with (usually fearless) was screaming at points.
The writing talent behind this show is incredible and managed to leave us hanging on to each word the actors said and the plot is threaded out slowly yet intriguingly and when you look back after the performance you realise how it played out from the start with the little details. Despite the small, claustrophobic set, the script is passive and the actors manage to make out the audience is not there at all times, this doesn’t mean that the actors didn’t get up close! The small room lead me to believe it would be the only setting however there were some very clever ways of conveying different locations!
It’s so hard to talk about The Ghost of Chesterton House without giving away any spoilers so to sum it up: it’s an incredible, terrifying experience from start to finish with an incredible set and story writing!

The show is travelling to various locations and a sequel is set to release in October. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @ghostroomuk
